Hidden costs of buying a used car: what to budget beyond the price

In short
The advertised price is only part of what a used car costs you: taxes and registration, insurance, tolls, the car's condition and any loan come on top. This guide gives a worksheet in the order you pay these items and points to the official page or calculator for each country. We publish no amounts because they change and depend on the car. As of October 2026.

Start from the total, not from the price in the ad
Compare cars by the total you will pay in the first year, so fill in a worksheet for every car on your shortlist.
| Cost | When you pay it | Where to find the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | At signing | The contract and the invoice |
| Tax on acquisition or import | Before registration | The official calculator of the country where you register |
| Registration and transfer fees | At registration | The registration authority or the official page for your country |
| Technical check or homologation for a car from another EU country | Before registration | The authority named in the table below |
| Motor insurance | Before registration | Quotes from insurers for the exact car |
| Vignette or toll | When you start driving | The road operator's website |
| Service and wear parts | In the first months | A written quote from a workshop |
| History report or independent inspection | Before you buy | The provider's price list |
| Extended warranty | Optional, at purchase | The policy terms |
| Financing | Over the whole term | The APR and total cost of credit in the offer |
Taxes and registration: what the official sources say
Rules differ by country, and the same car can cost different amounts to register in different places. Official sources as read on 19 October 2026; use the linked pages for amounts.
| Country | What the official source says | Page or calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Slovenia | A purchase inside Slovenia needs no VAT or DMV filing. For a vehicle from another EU member state, the buyer declares the motor vehicle tax (DMV) within 15 days of acquisition, and the vehicle can be registered only after the assessment and homologation are complete (FURS, updated 23 February 2026). A change of ownership must be reported to the registration organisation within 15 days (Ministry of Infrastructure, 6 February 2024). | FURS: buying a vehicle in another EU state, with the DMV calculator |
| Croatia | A person who acquires a used vehicle in Croatia pays an administrative fee, calculated at the vehicle registration station (Porezna uprava, updated 23 January 2026). For a vehicle bought in another EU country, the special tax on motor vehicles is reported on a form and the Customs Administration gives the details. | Porezna uprava: acquiring a used vehicle and the customs calculator, which asks for the new-vehicle sale price |
| Germany | The motor vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer) starts with registration. The tax notice usually follows about two weeks later, and the tax is paid in advance, normally for one year (Zoll). | Zoll: start of the tax liability and the Kfz-Steuer calculator |
| Austria | For a car imported from another EU country, a private person calculates the NoVA and pays it to the tax office before registration (usp.gv.at, updated 1 July 2026). The digital motorway vignette is tied to the licence plate (ASFINAG). | usp.gv.at: NoVA, with the federal calculator |
Your Europe adds that VAT rules depend on whether the car is new or used and whether you buy from a dealer or a private seller, and that authorities may check at registration that VAT was paid correctly (Your Europe, last checked 5 November 2024).
Insurance and tolls: small items that block you if you forget them
Proof of insurance is among the documents typically required to register a car (Your Europe), so arrange the policy before you go to the registration office. In Slovenia the e-vignette is tied to the licence plate, and most errors occur when the plate is entered; once it is valid, the data can no longer be changed (DARS, 25 January 2023). In Austria the digital vignette is also bound to the plate (ASFINAG). Buy a vignette only after you know the plate.
The cost of the car's condition: get a quote before you sign
Wear and faults are the least predictable cost, so turn each doubt into a written quote. A workshop can price brakes, tyres, fluids and any repair a test drive suggests, and that figure belongs in your worksheet.
| What to check | How | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Service history against mileage | Compare entries with the odometer. | Whether maintenance followed the mileage. |
| Mileage and past inspections | In Slovenia, the public view on eUprava shows mileage and technical inspections for a plate and permit number (gov.si). | Whether the odometer reading is consistent. |
| Wear parts | Ask a workshop to inspect brakes, tyres and fluids. | A quote for what is due soon. |
| Fault codes | Have the car read with a diagnostic tool. | Faults the dashboard does not show yet. |
| Vehicle history | Order a history report for the VIN. | Damage and ownership records, if the provider has them. |
Warranty: know what the seller owes you
When a consumer buys from a trader, the seller is liable for defects that exist at delivery and appear within two years. For second-hand goods the parties may agree a shorter period where the Member State allows it, but not shorter than one year (Directive (EU) 2019/771, Article 10). A defect that appears within the first year is presumed to have existed at delivery unless the seller proves otherwise (Article 11). An extended warranty is a separate product, so read what it covers before you count it as protection.
Financing: compare the total cost, not the monthly payment
The annual percentage rate of charge (APR) is the total cost of the credit to the consumer, expressed as an annual percentage of the total amount of credit (Directive 2008/48/EC, Article 3). The total cost includes interest, commissions, taxes and other fees the consumer must pay and the creditor knows of. Directive (EU) 2023/2225 repeals the 2008 directive with effect from 20 November 2026, and existing agreements continue under the old rules (Article 47). Ask each lender for the APR and the total amount payable, and check whether insurance or other services are required to get the credit.
What this means for buyers and for dealers
For buyers: Fill in the worksheet for every car and compare the totals. Open the official calculator for your country before you phone the seller, because the tax on an import can change which car is cheapest.
For dealers: Show a clear cost sheet to customers who buy across borders: the tax calculator link, the registration steps and the warranty terms. To find stock, save a search in WeltScout with filters for mileage, year and seller type. It covers 50+ portals in 14 countries, sends alerts by WhatsApp or e-mail and checks once or twice a day depending on the plan. The trial needs no card.
Questions about the costs of a used car
Which costs are easy to overlook?
Registration taxes and fees on a car from another country, the vignette tied to the plate, insurance needed before registration, and the first service. Each has an official source or a quote you can get before you buy.
Can I register a car I bought in another EU country?
Generally you register a car in the country where you normally live, and national rules apply, because there is no EU-wide law on vehicle registration (Your Europe). Check the authority of your country before you pay.
How do I compare two loan offers?
Compare the APR and the total amount payable, then check which extras are compulsory. A lower monthly payment can come with a longer term or a larger final payment.
Does the dealer's warranty cover everything that breaks?
No. The legal liability covers defects that existed at delivery, and an extended warranty covers only what its terms list. Read the exclusions before you rely on either.
