In short

Choose a tool for finding used cars on five properties: how many sources it covers, how often it checks them, how it alerts you, which criteria you can set and what it costs. This guide is for buyers and dealers. It contains criteria and a test you can run yourself, and no league table of providers. As of October 2026.

Why there is no league table of platforms

We do not publish a league table of portals because we have no verifiable data on the coverage and check frequency of individual providers. Instead you get criteria and a test.

Three kinds of tools for finding used cars

Tools differ in what they search and when they tell you. The table sorts them into three groups.

KindGood forLimitSuits
Classifieds portal (own listings)Browsing the supply in one country, saved searchesYou see only that portal's listingsA buyer searching in one country
Results aggregator (one search across several portals)Comparing prices between sourcesCoverage depends on the providerA buyer or dealer comparing markets
Search tool with alerts (saves the search and notifies you of new listings)Not missing new listingsDepends on how often it checksA dealer who sources vehicles regularly

Eight criteria for choosing

You can test each criterion yourself before you pay.

CriterionQuestionHow to checkWarning sign
Source coverageWhich countries and portals does it cover?Search the same model by hand on three portals and compare with the toolThe provider does not state its coverage
Check frequencyHow many times a day does it look for new listings?Ask the provider in writing and compare the listing time with the alert time during a trialThe frequency cannot be found out
AlertsThrough which channel (e-mail, WhatsApp, app) do they arrive?Set up one search and wait for the first alertAlerts cannot be limited to your criteria
Search criteriaMake, model, fuel, price, mileage, year; is the search saved?Set up your usual searchA criterion you need is missing
Duplicate listingsDoes the same car from several portals appear once?Find a car listed on two portalsThe same car shows up several times
Link to the originalDoes the alert lead to the listing and the seller?Open the first ten linksThe link leads to an intermediary, not the seller
Price and termsMonthly price, minimum term, cancellation, price with or without VATRead the terms before you payThe terms cannot be found
Language and supportWhat language is the app in, and in which languages does support reply?Send one question to supportSupport does not reply in your language

A five-step test

The test takes two days of noting listings by hand.

  1. Define three searches: model, budget and country.
  2. For two days, note new listings by hand on two portals.
  3. Compare your list with what the tool showed.
  4. Count the listings the tool missed and those it found before you did.
  5. Read the terms: minimum term, cancellation and price with or without VAT.

Tax and registration when buying abroad: the official source

A tool finds the listing; tax and registration follow official rules. According to Your Europe (page last checked 21 September 2026), when you buy a used car from a dealer, VAT may or may not be charged and is shown separately on the invoice, while a private seller is treated differently. You register a used car in the country where you permanently live and pay registration and road tax there. We state no amounts. Check the official Your Europe page on VAT when buying or selling a car abroad and your own tax authority.

What this means for a buyer and for a dealer

For a buyer

For a single purchase with no time pressure, a saved search on one or two portals may be enough. A search tool with alerts pays off if you want a rare model or are looking in several countries at once.

For a dealer

A dealer should choose by coverage, check frequency and price per user. WeltScout monitors 50+ portals in 14 countries and sends a WhatsApp or e-mail alert when a new listing matches your criteria. It checks listings once or twice a day, depending on the plan. The trial needs no card, and the Business plan starts at EUR 129.90 per month excluding VAT. The app is English only for now, and support replies in the languages of this site. More articles are in the blog index.

Example: one search on 11 portals

One search for the Audi A4 Avant with ten filters returned 854 matches on 27 October 2026 on 11 portals in 11 countries. One portal returned 745, six others together 109, and four portals returned none. This is a snapshot of one search on one day, not market statistics. The table by portal, the method and the limits are in the article One search, 11 portals: what an Audi A4 Avant returns.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a search tool if I already use a portal?

Not necessarily. A portal shows its own listings. A search tool helps if you look across several portals or countries and do not want to check each by hand.

How many listings does a search tool really cover?

You cannot tell from a description, so run the test in this article. If a provider does not state its coverage, treat that as a warning sign.

Will a search tool buy the car for me?

No. It finds the listing and alerts you. Inspecting the car, negotiating, the contract, tax and registration are yours to handle.

How often does WeltScout check for new listings?

Once or twice a day, depending on the plan. During the trial, new listings are checked twice a day.
